SMS Deliverer

On-premise SMS vs cloud platforms

Cloud platforms rent you per-message capacity on their numbers; an on-premise gateway turns hardware you already own into the sending channel. Seven dimensions decide which model fits, and cost is only one of them. Rates below include carrier fees and were captured on 2026-11-04.

The seven dimensions, side by side

Cloud CPaaS means platforms such as Twilio, Sinch or Bird. On-premise here means SMS Deliverer on your own hardware.

These are all-in prices from the providers' public pricing pages, captured 2026-11-04. Your quote varies by country, volume and registration status. US 10DLC registration ($4–44 brand, $15 campaign vetting, $1.5–10 a month) and number rental are extra. Cloud prices move month to month, so treat these as indicative.

Which buyer are you?

Low volume, many countries

A few hundred messages a month to mixed international destinations, no hardware in place. Choose cloud. The per-message bill stays small, and global routing is the platform's problem. Below the break-even, cloud is the rational buy — the calculator shows where that line sits for you.

Steady volume, own SIMs

Thousands of messages a month, mostly domestic, with SIM cards and a PC already in place. Choose on-premise. At 3,000 messages a month the licence pays for itself in about 20 months, and the contact list never leaves your database.

Regulated or offline

Patient data, government networks, industrial sites, or a compliance rule against third-party processors. On-premise is the only option of the two — cloud cannot meet a requirement that data must not leave the building.

What an honest on-premise pitch must admit

  • You supply and maintain the hardware: a GSM/LTE modem or Android phone per SIM, and a Windows PC that stays on.
  • Throughput is bounded by the modem and the carrier. SIM-based sending suits thousands of messages per campaign, not operator-grade bursts — cloud scales further for one-off blasts.
  • Sender identity is a normal mobile number. Short codes and alphanumeric sender IDs are cloud-only.
  • Delivery is never guaranteed on either model: carriers throttle, filter and reject on both paths.

For the cost arithmetic with your own volume, use the lifetime license vs per-message calculator. For the hardware side, start with the supported modems and phones.

Questions about on-premise and cloud SMS

Is on-premise SMS always cheaper than cloud?

No. Below the break-even volume the cloud bill is smaller and there is no hardware to buy. With a typical all-in US rate of $0.0125 per segment, a $269 lifetime license breaks even at roughly 61,400 messages over three years; the calculator on this site works it out for your numbers.

What do cloud platforms charge per message?

All-in US A2P rates captured 2026-11-04: Twilio $0.0125, Plivo $0.0122, Bird $0.0080 and Alibaba Cloud International $0.0086 per segment, carrier fees included. Rates to other countries are several times higher: Twilio charges $0.112 to Germany, $0.056 to the UK and $0.0599 to Brazil.

Can an on-premise gateway work without internet?

Yes. Messages travel from the PC to the modem over USB and from the modem to the carrier over the mobile network. The public internet is only needed for the initial download and license activation.

Do I get a short code with an on-premise gateway?

No. Sending uses your SIM cards, so recipients see normal mobile numbers. Short codes and alphanumeric sender IDs are only available through cloud providers and carriers.

Which model is better for OTP and alerts?

Both deliver, with different trade-offs: cloud offers managed global routing at per-message cost; on-premise keeps the numbers and logs inside your network and works during internet outages. Regulated environments usually have to choose on-premise.
